Introduction
SlipSide (“we”, “us”, or “our”) is a grocery budgeting application operated by Dale Gurney in the Republic of South Africa. This Privacy Policy explains how we collect, use, store, and protect your personal information when you use SlipSide.
By using SlipSide, you agree to the practices described in this policy. If you do not agree, please do not use the app.
What data we collect
We collect the following categories of information to provide our services:
- Account information: your name and email address when you register.
- Grocery order data: store names, product names, prices, quantities, and related details you enter manually, import, or capture via till-slip scanning.
- Device push notification token: if you enable notifications, we store an Expo push token so we can send budget alerts and summaries to your device.
- Usage data: basic information about how you interact with the app (such as feature usage and error logs) to improve reliability and performance.
How we use your data
We use your information solely to operate and improve SlipSide, including to:
- Provide budget tracking, spending reports, and household sharing features.
- Send budget warning and summary notifications you have opted into.
- Maintain and secure your account.
We never sell your data to third parties. We do not share your grocery or personal data with retailers, advertisers, or data brokers without your explicit consent.
Data storage
Your data is stored securely using a managed cloud database and authentication platform. Data is protected in transit using industry-standard encryption (TLS/HTTPS) and at rest as provided by our infrastructure providers.
We take reasonable technical and organisational measures to prevent unauthorised access, loss, or misuse of your information.
Your rights under POPIA
Under the Protection of Personal Information Act, 2013 (POPIA), you have the right to:
- Access the personal information we hold about you.
- Correct inaccurate or incomplete personal information.
- Delete your personal information, subject to legal obligations.
- Object to the processing of your personal information in certain circumstances.

Data retention
We retain your data for as long as your account remains active and as needed to provide our services.
If you request account deletion, we will delete or anonymise your personal information within 30 days, except where we are required by law to retain certain records.
Third party services
SlipSide relies on trusted third-party providers to deliver certain features. These providers process data on our behalf under their own privacy and security terms, and we only share the minimum data necessary for each one to perform its function:
- Cloud database and authentication platform: used to securely store your account and grocery order data, and to manage sign-in.
- Text recognition service: used to read text from photographed till slips. Images sent for this purpose are processed for text extraction only; we do not store till-slip images on our servers after processing.
- AI-based data extraction service: used to structure recognised till-slip text into individual line items (product names and prices).
- Subscription management provider: used to process SlipSide Pro subscription payments through the Apple App Store. This provider only receives the information necessary to verify and manage your subscription status; SlipSide does not receive or store your payment card details.
- Google authentication service: used only if you choose to connect your Gmail account, so SlipSide can automatically import grocery order confirmation emails. We only read emails containing grocery order line items; we do not access, read, or store any other email content.
- Underlying cloud infrastructure: used by some of our service providers to host and run their services.
Children
SlipSide is not intended for users under the age of 18. We do not knowingly collect personal information from children. If you believe a child has provided us with personal data, please contact us and we will delete it promptly.
Changes to this policy
We may update this Privacy Policy from time to time. If we make material changes, we will notify you through the app or by email before the changes take effect. The “Last updated” date at the top of this page will always reflect the current version.
